{"id":12021,"date":"2024-02-15T11:30:12","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T16:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebackyardnaturalist.com\/wordpress\/?p=12021"},"modified":"2024-02-15T11:30:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T16:30:13","slug":"the-great-backyard-bird-count-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebackyardnaturalist.com\/wordpress\/the-great-backyard-bird-count-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Backyard Bird Count 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Take Fifteen Minutes and Help Make a World of Difference<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During February 16th-19th, counting birds in your backyard will help create a real time, global snapshot of wild bird populations and their locations.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Great Backyard Bird Count<\/strong>&nbsp;(GBBC) is a four day, world-wide count that helps us learn more about wild birds and changes in their territories over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just three super-easy steps!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdcount.org\/participate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Birdcount.org&nbsp;<\/a>for all the details, but this is basically how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create your free&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdcount.org\/\">Great Backyard Bird Count<\/a>&nbsp;account at birdcount.org.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Count birds for at least 15 minutes<\/strong>&nbsp;during February 16-19. You can submit more checklists! Keep a checklist for each count you do in additional locations, different times or on other days during the GBBC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit your results&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdcount.org\/ebird-on-computer\/\">on the GBBC website<\/a>&nbsp;or download the free&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdcount.org\/ebird-mobile-app\/\">eBird Mobile app<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How your count helps wild birds.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With data from citizen-science, scientists can better determine how birds are affected by habitat loss, pollution and disease. &nbsp;<strong>Knowing where greatest needs are for species-specific conservation leads to targeted action to help birds&#8217; survival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How your count makes a world of difference.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Online citizen-science projects, like GBBC, offer research opportunities at a global scale. Our real-time observations and those of other volunteers world-wide are&nbsp;<strong>helping researchers identify and track larger trends in a changing climate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Citizen-science offers unlimited opportunities to make a difference<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The GBBC, launched in 1998, was the first online citizen-science project. Now, there are many more than we can list here! The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenscience.gov\/catalog\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CitizenScience.gov catalog<\/a>&nbsp;alone has 497 project listings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For teachers, parents and mentors of junior citizen scientists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the perfect opportunity to share your love of birding with kids. &nbsp;<strong>The Cornell Lab<\/strong>&#8216;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/k12\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Feathered-Friends-Home-Connections-February.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;Feathered Friends&#8217; GBBC info and family activities sheet<\/a>&nbsp;is just one of their many FREE, fun and educational resources to help you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/k12\/nature-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inspire and nurture a child&#8217;s life-long connection with nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thank you for creating and maintaining sanctuaries for your backyard birds.<br>Together, backyard by backyard, we are all making a difference.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your continuing support of our efforts here at the store means the world to us.
